Nairobi County SOMIRENEC advocates for improved sanitation and expansion of sewer lines in slums through public participation.

SOMIRENEC continues to advocate for improved sanitation and expansion of sewer lines in slum neighborhoods in Nairobi.  To achieve this SOMIRENEC is implementing a citizen awareness programme on the devolved governance structures. The organization is also working with the county leadership on how to improve sanitation levels and is further creating public awareness on citizens’ roles in county development. SOMIRENEC has supported communites to demand for their right to education and has assisted six students clear their school fees and graduate with diplomas in Civic and Development Education.

Some of the activities initiated by SOMIRENEC include a clean up exercises in Kariobangi and Huruma slums, a football match to sensitize the community on proper garbage disposal practices at Mathare-Kosovo, and has created designated garbage collection points in Kariobangi and Mathare.

To effectively implement this sanitation programme, SOMIRENEC works with the County Government, youth groups in Korogocho, Kariobangi, Huruma and Mathare, schools and churches.

SOMIRENEC has been successful in ensuring provision of water services to Kariobangi North Primary School, management of sewage manhole in Ndururuno Primary School and successfully invited county leaders to an emergency meeting on how to contain a cholera outbreak in Kiamaiko Ward.
