Call for Submissions: Competition for Amateur Documentary Producers

Are you an amateur documentary producer passionate about empowering citizens to achieve the constitutional promises of Public Participation, Integrity, Equality and Devolution? Are you ready to use your skills in video production to capture and document citizens’ and leaders’ views and actions around these four constitutional promises? If so, you are the person we are looking for.  

The Competition for Amateur Documentary Producers seeks to identify, commission and support four creative amateur documentary producers to produce one 10-15 minute documentaries in each of the four categories namely:

A.    Public Participation     B. Integrity        C. Equality       D. Devolution

The winner in each category will be supported and mentored between December 1st 2014 and February 28th 2015 to produce a 10-15 minute documentary in any four of the following ten counties: Bungoma, Garissa, Kajiado, Kisumu, Machakos, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Turkana and Taita Taveta.

Eligibility criteria: To qualify to participate in the competition, applicants will:

a)       Be recent graduates or senior students currently studying videography, film and related courses in a post-secondary institution

b)       Possess skills in scripting and videography

c)       Be able and willing to travel across four counties between January and February 2015;

Applicants for this competition are required to:

  • Submit a 3-minute trailer entry for consideration in any chosen category together with an accompanying script, OR multiple, separate 3-minute trailer entries in the chosen categories with their accompanying scripts;
  • An outline proposal of how they will produce the  10-15 minute documentary including; a reasonable but itemized budget, estimate of the time duration required to complete the assignment;
  • A CV (2pages max.) indicating experience, interests, previous productions and web links to the same if available.

Entries will be judged on technical and content including

  1. Creativity and innovation in producing documentaries with a clear ‘Call to action’;
  2. Demonstrated potential in quality scripting, shooting and editing skills;
  3. Knowledge of constitution of Kenya and importance of the four promises;
